As a guidance counselor, I would have kids come into my office and actually think that I could wave my magic counseling wand and solve their problems for them. But a good counselor, a good teacher, a good parent gives the child the wand and shows them how to use it. If you can show a kid how to solve their own problems, they can become life-long problem solvers if you can teach them the skills that they need. If you put those skills into a story and you read the story to the child and the child identifies with the character in the story, then the child can learn those strategies to become life-long problem solvers themselves.
