No one ever said parenting is easy, and potty training often is the first challenge that drives many parents over the edge. But toilet training doesn’t have to be a terrible experience, for you or your child. Using the following tips can help prepare your child for this major milestone and head off some of the more daunting potty problems:
- Wait until your child is at least 2 years old.
- Make sure both you and your child are ready before you start toilet training.
- Prepare to be patient, encouraging and able to handle the inevitable setbacks.
- Seeing is believing. Having your child watch you go to the bathroom may be one of the best ways to prepare him or her for the real thing.
- Have your child set in the potty chair for a “dry run” so he or she can get used to using it.
- Relax and take the attitude that you’ll let your child proceed at his or her own pace.
- Praise your child every time he or she correctly practices any part of toilet behavior.
