I Just Don't Like the Sound of No!
Who does?! If "NO" is your child's least favorite word, they are going to relate beautifully to RJ. RJ tries so very hard to convince his father, mother and teacher to turn their "no's" into "yes" or at the very least, "maybe." Sound familiar? Like RJ, our kids are mini-master negotiators. But as you know, they need to learn how to accept "no" for an answer.
Our job as parents is to teach our children fundamental social skills to use both at home and school in order to be able to disagree appropriately. The "Say YES to NO Club" in this book is a great tool that explains 4 simple strategies for disagreeing with someone the right way. The strategies taught in this book align perfectly with our mindful mama mission of acceptance: not overreacting to an undesirable situation, staying calm and responding appropriately.
If you like this book, you must checkout the entire series, BEST ME I Can Be! by Boys Town Press. Each book is dedicated to teaching children social skills that can make their lives at home and school happier and more successful.

The Worst Day of My Life Ever
You know those days— the ones where the moment you wake up, everything seems to go wrong? Our kids have those days, too. In The Worst Day of My Life EVER, little RJ learns that his problems are occurring because he is not listening and paying attention. Hummm… sound familiar?! Any child (preK-6th grade) will be able to relate to RJ and his trials and tribulations of getting gum stuck in his hair, missing recess because he's late to school, and completely messing up his mom's kitchen. Since these instances are so relatable for little kids, this book effectively conveys its message of HOW to listen and pay attention.
As a parent and teacher, what I love about this book is that the central message is explicit and easy to understand. RJ's mom is very clear and concise when she explains that he just needs to do 2 things to make his life easier— LISTEN and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. She then goes on to explain 4 steps for how to really listen to someone and how to follow instructions. I actually copied these steps down on a piece of paper and posted them on our refrigerator. I review them with my girls every time we are having a breakdown in communication and relate their behaviors back to RJ. Making this connection helps them to learn these essential life skills quickly and easily.
If your child is ready to learn that their actions have consequences (good and bad), this is a great book to start with. It's cute, beautifully illustrated and engaging. My girls are captivated every time I read it.
