Ten Year Old Is Acting Out

Hello! I need guidance. I have two sons, one is 16 and a really good kid- respectful, good grades, sports, etc. My youngest is 10 and exactly the opposite. I am so worried that I have a juvenile delinquent on my hands. He is becoming more defiant, mouthy, attitude, grades dropping, bullying, etc. Now he is being punished, of course. The TV is taken away, privileges etc. But, now how do I change his outlook? I don't know how to handle him. He thinks being popular means being a class clown, the big shot. I have not raised him like this! Please, some advise!! Thank you.

Thank you for contacting us. It sounds like your sons have different personalities and your oldest son learns quickly from his consequences and then implements "good decision making” right away. Your second son sounds like he is requiring more teaching and reinforcement. That is challenging for any parent. It's great that you are looking into ways to help him; that's good parenting...it's a tough job!

You are describing several behaviors that could benefit from what we call "teaching him social skills". This information can be found here on the Parenting.org website

If you feel like you need additional support, you might want to consider outside help from a counselor. If you need help finding a counselor in your area then you could call us and we will look in our database to find something close. To say that it's challenging to parent a child with the behaviors you describe is an understatement. That's why our Hotline is here, to help parents and kids. Not only do we have a lot of practical resources, but we also offer compassion and listening ear. Check out the above link (www.parenting.org) and also call or write as needed. We are here for you!

Sincerely,
Diana, Crisis Counselor
