Son Failing Freshman Year

My 15 year old son will not get up for school, he is failing his freshman year. We have been notified by the school district that we are being taken to court because of his attendance problem. We have tried taking away special perks he enjoys, no effect. He is a loner and spends most of his time indoors. I work night shifts and am not awake in the mornings when he is supposed to go to school. I'm at a loss of what I can do next, readjust his bed time to 8:30Pm?? See a medical doctor? Sign him up for summer school?

Thank you for e-mailing us with your concerns. I am sorry to hear about your son and the issues that you are now experiencing with the school. That has to be very frustrating for you. I am wondering if your son could be very depressed, but I cannot be certain. The following questions come to my mind: What time does he normally go to sleep and for how long? Have you noticed any changes in his behavior, diet, or appearance? How long has he not been attending school? Could he be avoiding going to school due to peer-related issues? Is he involved in any drug use?

I would definitely encourage you to arrange an appointment for your son with a psychiatrist and with a regular family doctor to evaluate him for physical and/or mental health related issues. If we can be of further help by looking up any mental health referrals in your area, please call us at #1-800-448-3000. We would also be happy to speak with you further about your son.

Thanks again for reaching out for help.

Sincerely,
Maria
