Precious Beginnings - Preventive Teaching

Q. What is Preventive Teaching, and can I use it with my toddler?

A. Preventive Teaching is a way to teach your child what he or she should do in a future situation and help him or her practice in advance. Preventive Teaching involves these three steps:

  • Show and tell the positive behavior
  • Practice
  • Show approval

This is an excellent way for young children to learn the skills they will need to handle new situations or to better handle situations that they've had problems with.

Q. What if I use Preventive Teaching and my child still misbehaves?

A. You might need to increase the number of times you practice a new skill with your child. Most children won't learn the first time they're taught something new. Keep trying and encouraging the behavior with praise and positive consequences.

Q. If my son doesn't want to practice a new skill, should I make him?

A. No. If your child resists, don't force it. However, you shouldn't forget about teaching him the skill. The best opportunities to practice are at neutral times when he is calm or when he wants to be with you.

Q. Can I use Preventive Teaching to help my daughter learn what to do if she's in a serious situation?

A. Definitely. Issues such as "Stranger Danger" and playground safety highlight how valuable Preventive Teaching can be. Show and tell your daughter what she should say and do if she's approached by someone she doesn't know, including how to find help and stay safe.

Q. How old should a child be before you start using Preventive Teaching?

A. If your child is old enough to understand what you're saying and can do the actions that you describe, he or she is ready for Preventive Teaching.
